Burbage Valley In Winter

Burbage Valley In Winter

The Burbage Valley is surrounded by interesting geological and historical features making it a great walk at any time of year. Sheffield Country Walk runs North-South between Burbage Edge and Burbage Brook. Many other paths criss-cross the landscape too, though some care is needed if you take any of the less distinct routes in the bottom of the valley. They can be wet and very boggy as I’ve found out to my cost in the past. In wet weather the top of Burbage Edge too can be a challenge because of extensive wear to the footpath. But don’t let any of this put you off because its an easily accessible part of the Peak District and suitable for most weather condition. So long as you’re properly attired and don’t mind mud on your boots.

You can already find a walking guide for one route around the valley on this site here. Therefore I’ll just mention the current situation on the route we took yesterday.

First of all its cold right now, and while that might not be appealing to everyone it does have the advantage of making a lot of the surface water freeze, so it’s less muddy! I say less muddy because it’s still pretty squishy up there on Burbage Edge depite a lot of the standing water was solid. Outside of the colder Winter months the moors, and especially the ground leading down to and around Burbage Brook is wet and boggy. Yesterday’s walk took us from the Burbage North Bridge, South down Burbage Edge to the Hathersage Road. From there we headed North, back to the car via the Sheffield Country Walk. Altogether that’s around around 6.3 kilometres.
